Once the Civil War ended in 1865 and the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, African Americans were technically free people but soon after, those free people were under the Black Codes. These codes were actually laws that were put in place and consisted of many things such as being in groups of more than 3 people at a time, own their own firearm, join militia, vote, testify, go against whites in any way, etc. , would cause a beating or other punishment such as jail time. African Americans were forced to carry around a certificate of freedom and if the didn't, they would be beaten or thrown in jail. These were unfair consequences that African Americans had to face because white people wanted supreme power after the Civil War. These laws reflected the idea of only white supremacy and black inferiority. This was the idea that everything back then revolved around. The 13th amendment also caused black codes to happen because amendment abolished slavery and freed more than 3 million people and white people still wanted to have power over blacks.
